Attorneys for accused murderer Gladis Soto called their first witnesses Thursday, including a former classmate who portrayed the mother of six as a caring soul who suffered years of abuse by the husband she admits killing.

Maria Fernandez, who met Soto at Oxnard College five years ago, said she saw bruises on the defendant's body on five occasions - bruises she was told were caused by Pedro Alba, 35, whom Soto admits shooting Feb. 20.
