For centuries, Pompeii's violent destruction has been romanticized as a real-life DeMille-ian disaster epic, a spectacular morality play with a cast of thousands.
Generation upon generation has written its own fears and fixations onto the story of the volcanic eruption at Mount Vesuvius on Aug. 24, A.D. 79, which virtually wiped out the bustling, densely populated Roman Empire towns that stretched along the Bay of Naples.
