Amid melodic gibbon cries like those heard on old Tarzan movie soundtracks, Pinecrest School youngsters checked out this endangered ape Monday at the International Center for Gibbon Studies.

Located in Bouquet Canyon, the nonprofit gibbon preserve, run by Alan Mootnick has one of North America's largest populations of the tree-dwelling species.

About 30 gibbons live at the five-acre preserve. The gibbons are housed in cages with branches for climbing, much like their natural jungle habitats.
