The forces of the marketplace are gradually but inexorably reshaping the chain drug store business, and the industry that serves the consumers of the mid-21st century could in many respects be very different from the one that serves their counterparts today.

Speaking at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Regional Chain Conference in Key Biscayne, Fla., in January, NACDS president and chief executive officer Craig Fuller said, "By 2010--just eight short years from now -- prescription medications will likely represent 80% of drug store sales."
