When the European Union experienced a resurgence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreaks in late 2000, it responded by instituting a six-month ban on the feeding of meat and bone meal to any farmed animal kept for food production.
That ban was, of course, extended last June, and the "temporary" ban is poised for another extension, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).
With use banned and exports forbidden, the EU is faced with a massive meat and bone meal disposal problem.
