ON March 5, 1944, the body of young Welsh war poet Alun Lewis was discovered in mysterious circumstances on a hillside in Burma.

A second lieutenant with the 6th South Wales Borderers, who had landed in Burma not long before, Lewis was said to have been in an agitated state before his death. He had gone to the latrines and there had been a shot. When he was found his revolver was still in his hand. One shot had been fired.
