In this experiment, three different species of bacteria in broth and water were exposed to relatively extreme environmental conditions consisting of x-ray exposure, low temperatures, and a combination of both factors. The x-rays were generated by a dental x-ray machine and the cold was generated with a dry ice-methanol bath (approximately -60 [degrees] C). The harsh environmental conditions were intended to model to a degree the conditions extraterrestrial bacteria might experience inside a meteoroid blasted into space by an impact event on a planet such as Mars.
