Pharmacy benefit plans are increasingly providing treatment for behavioral health conditions as the number of Americans taking antidepressants and antianxiety medications surges dramatically and managed care plans cutback on behavioral health benefits.

New research shows that the number of Americans receiving treatment for depression soared nearly four-fold between 1987 and 1997, from 1.7 million to 6.3 million.
