SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Calling it "unfinished business" from the farmworker rights struggle, labor advocates are pressing California lawmakers to curtail the hand-weeding of row crops, a practice they say is crippling some farmworkers.

Advocates say growers and labor contractors are undermining a landmark 1975 ban on short-handled hoes by forcing farmworkers to weed crops by hand instead, causing them to work stooped over for as long as 10 hours a day.
