For western oil firms, Sudan's nascent oil industry is a plague many feel should be avoided. With powerful human rights lobbyists at home calling for disinvestment by shareholders and threats by the US government to de-list oil firms operating in Sudan from American capital markets, it is easy to see why western companies would elect to steer clear, even without regular threats by the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), who say they will shut down all the oilfields by force.
