SALT CAKE. (Sodium sulfate.) [Na.sub.2][SO.sub.4]. Mol. wt. 142.04; sp. gr. 2.7; soluble. Salt cake is obtained as a natural product (mined or crystallized from natural brines) and as a byproduct of the processes used to make HCI, rayon and other materials. Generally it contains at least 95% [Na.sub.2][SO.sub.4] and impurities such as sodium bisulfate, calcium sulfate, iron sulfate, iron oxide, magnesium sulfate, silica and/or sodium chloride.
