Every year, about 400,000 infants in the US are born with or soon develop vascular birthmarks. These birthmarks vary from small port-wine-colored stains on an unobvious part of the body to noticeable, disfiguring growths on the face. About 10% of these birthmarks, some of which obstruct sight, breathing, or speech development, require medical intervention.
