SALT LAKE CITY _ You just want to wince.

Jean Racine is sitting in a press conference room, batting back tears as she tells reporters about the conversations she still has inside her head with her mother, Cathleen, who died last May.

"I think she's just saying the things she always said, that she knows I can do it," Racine said.

You want this to be a feel-good Olympic story, Racine's quest for a U.S. gold medal in the first-ever women's Olympic bobsled competition, which starts Tuesday.

But there are just too many messy complications.
