Playwrights often base dramas on true stories. The Miracle Worker, by William Gibson, concerns the early life of Helen Keller (1884-1968).

Made blind and deaf by meningitis at the age of 18 months, she lived in a prison of sensory deprivation--until a young teacher named Annie Sullivan helped her break through that wall. Annie taught young Helen to communicate and uncovered her extraordinary intelligence and ability. As an adult, Helen overcame her challenges to become a writer, educator, and lecturer--and an inspiration.
