Our impulse is to see a straight line running between them: The triumps of Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birthday the nation commemorates for the fifth time this week, and of L. Douglas Wilder, sworn in last Saturday in Virginia as America's first elected black governor. In fact, there is a vast difference between the prophet and the pragmatist.
