WASHINGTON _ The FBI has begun a criminal investigation into accounting practices at Global Crossing Ltd., the high-speed telecommunications company that filed for bankruptcy last month, a federal law enforcement official said Friday.

The inquiry is to determine whether a full-scale criminal probe of the multibillion-dollar cable giant's financial management is warranted, the official said, asking not to be identified.

Earlier this week, Global Crossing officials reported that they were cooperating with the Securities and Exchange Commission in a separate investigation. ...
