1,3-Butadiene (BD), which is used to make styrene-butadiene rubber, is a potent carcinogen in mice and a probable carcinogen, associated with leukemia, in humans. We have previously used HPRT mutation as a biomarker to evaluate exposures to BD in a monomer production plant. We now report on a study of 49 workers in a styrene-butadiene rubber plant in which we used the concentration of the BD metabolite 1,2-dihydroxy-4-(N-acetylcysteinyl-S)-butane (M1) in urine as a biomarker of exp...

An automated exposure system for human inhalation study.
Archives of Environmental Health
; FOR DECADES, INVESTIGATORS have used inhalation chamber techniques in animal studies to study the toxicokinetics of gases or vapors. (1,2) However, extrapolation of animal data for the estimation of human risks, on the basis of weight or surface-area scaling, is of concern because the anatomic

Progressive muscle relaxation and aggression among elementary students with emotional or behavioral disorders
Behavioral Disorders
; ABSTRACT Students with emotional or behavioral disorders (E/BD) often engage in challenging behaviors, including physical aggression. One intervention included in multicomponent programs for students with E/BD is relaxation. Despite its widespread inclusion, no studies were located that examined

Human physiologic factors in respiratory uptake of 1,3-butadiene. (Articles).
Environmental Health Perspectives
; 1,3-Butadiene (BD), a suspected human carcinogen, is used as the raw material in industries to make synthetic butyl rubber and plastics. Simulation models using experimental animal data have shown that physiologic factors play an important role in the kinetic behavior of BD. However, human data are

The Mode of Oral Bovine Lactoferrin Administration Influences Mucosal and Systemic Immune Responses in Mice
The Journal of Nutrition
; ABSTRACT Food protein intake interacts with the immune system. In earlier nutritional and immunological studies, nutrients, particularly milk whey proteins, were generally administered in soluble form and by gavage. However, orogastric intubation does not represent a natural way of ingesting
