Music biographies are problematic.
How much should they balance art with life? How can they capture musical legacy in the soundless space of the printed page?
Then there are jazz biographies, which suffer even more _ from an absence of historical record, from rampant cliches of the jazz life, from an obligatory improvisation that might mirror the music but obscures the truth.
Some of the best jazz books have been the memoirs by fast-life musicians such as Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow, Hampton Hawes and Charles Mingus.
