Standard cell application specific integrated circuits (ASICS) will cost more in 2002, but the price increase may be due to an increase in functionality rather than market conditions. Functionality increases as manufacturers cram more gates onto the chips. The average price of a standard cell increased to $10.80 in the first quarter of this year from $8.80 in the first quarter of 2001. However, the price slowly fell through the year to $9.60 in the third quarter. The price should bottom out in the first quarter 2002 and then rise again.
