When choreographer Twyla Tharp was born, her mother sent out birth announcements with a simple, startling declaration: "She'll grow up to be famous.''

Tharp, however, is not at all interested in talking about her life. And, at first, she seems even reluctant to discuss her work.

"I prefer not to burden peoples heads in advance,'' she replies when asked to talk about "Mozart Clarinet Quintet K.581" and "Surfer at the River Styx," the two dances her company, Twyla Tharp Dance, will perform at the Madison Civic Center on Wednesday.
