When Easy Goer was upset by Sunday Silence in the 1989 Kentucky Derby in the same sloppy conditions at Churchill Downs that resulted in his shocking loss in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile six months earlier, it seemed like only a matter of time before trainer Shug McGaughey would be back to saddle a horse to win the Run for the Roses.

Yet, no one could have imagined it would take him 12 years for a chance to ease the disappointment of Easy Goer's defeat.
