ZAGREB, Croatia, Jan 27, 2002

Five men including a former Croatian army general, charged with war crimes against ethnic Serb civilians in 1991, are set to go on trial Monday before a local court after nine postponements in the past six months.

Another seven war-crime suspects, all former Croatian military policemen, went into the fifth day Sunday of a hunger strike. They demanded their release following a four-month detention at the jail in the central Adriatic port city of Split, southeast of the port of Rijeka, where the five men are standing trial.
