THE farmer was not only an excellent fruit grower. He was also the undisputed poet laureat (makata) of the whole barrio. Whenever the village queen had to be crowned, the tribute was invariably assigned to him. Not just to compose the poetic piece but to deliver it in his dramatic baritone voice as well.
Most admired was his ability at balagtasan (debate in poetry). For absolutely no preparation was made. The topic for debate was assigned at the time of the joust. Logic ...
