Constantine P. Cavafy is widely regarded as the greatest of the modern Greek poets. Moreover; he has served as a constant source of inspiration for other poets of the 20th century, and arguably a special font of influence for gay male poets. Cavafy, who lived most of his life in Alexandria, Egypt, not only produced some of the most touching homoerotic verse--this within a culture opposed to gay life--but also wrote historical poems that are considered masterpieces.
