Jan. 15--Unemployment in New Jersey rose from 4.7 percent to 4.9 percent last month, continuing an upward trend that began a year ago, the state Labor Department said Monday.

Still, New Jersey's unemployment rate has been lower than the national rate for most of the past two years. In December, national unemployment was 5.8 percent, the highest in more than six years.
