Perhaps lost in the maze of media coverage of the Sept. 11 attacks, the subsequent start of war in Afghanistan and the anthrax attacks, was the fact that experts on inventory issues began suggesting that hospitals might place a strain on the supply chain by stocking up on items they might ordinarily purchase in a reasonably predictable pattern. This abnormal supply chain behavior, it was suggested, would come as a reaction to fear of a disruption in distributor deliveries.
