Several large methanol units will be constructed in China in the next few years according to the needs in the development of the coal chemical industry and the natural gas chemical industry. The total capacity of methanol will reach 3.5 - 4.0 million t/a in 2005. Some units using the high-pressure process or having a small scale will be eliminated. The soft methanol market in the world led to a low operating rate (48 - 58%) of domestic producers and a net import increase in 1998 and 1999.
