AGING AIRPLANES Can research make them safer? U.S. AIRLINES are entering the 1990s on the wings of the oldest civilian fleet in history.

The average age of the 3,300 jets in operation is 13 years. Many of these jetliners are being flown daily for years beyond their designed economic lifetimes.

Two recent incidents illustrate the severity of this problem--the April 1988 accident in which a 19-year-old Aloha Airline Boeing 737 ripped open in flight, killing a flight attendant and injuring 65 of the 94 passengers; and this past July's crash of a 15-year-old ...
