The Vatican's private astronomical research observatory is one of the oldest astronomical facilities in the world. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII founded a committee to help reform the old Julian calendar and to advance sea navigation. This early astronomy work resulted in the Gregorian calendar we use today. Since that time, the papacy has been interested in science and specifically astronomy.
