By early 1781, the British army had a strong grip on most of South Carolina. Marching with precision and carrying powerful weapons, thousands of well-trained English soldiers spread out across that colony. Although a few American rebel fighters still remained, these men had little military experience. Their supplies were low, their weapons were poor, and they had been driven into isolated swamps. It certainly appeared that the British held an enormous edge.

But American rebels in the swamps had one advantage over the British: their commander, Francis Marion. ...
