Behind the Mountains : Life in Portugal's Remote Tras-os-Montes.

The region is remote. It would be remoter still had it not been for the largesse of the World Bank. The Tras-os-Montes, whose name literally means "behind the mountains," snuggles behind an imposing rampart in Portugal's northeast corner. Geography isolated the region from economic development for millennia.

This insularity came to an end in 1986, when Portugal entered the European Community. International money bankrolled a modern highway system that linked the Tras-os-Montes to the rest of the country. As a result, today, whoever has a car can easily overcome the ...
