Culture in the Curriculum: Enriching Numeration and Number Operations.

Students hear, "Pretend that you live on an island. You have no contact with others. You do not know words or written symbols for numbers. Your task is to develop a numeration system-a method that would allow you to count coconuts or shells, for example." This task was the first one given to fourth graders in an attempt to embed multiculturalism in their mathematics curriculum. This article describes the content of the project and the students' reactions.
