Although the two major sections of Le Roman de la rose were written by different authors about forty years apart, the poem begins and ends with mythological incidents which form a frame for its main narrative. (1) Near the beginning of the poem Guillaume de Lorris recounts Ovid's story of Narcissus; near the end, Jean de Meun tells Ovid's story of Pygmalion (Hult 264 n. 3). The two passages are linked by their common origin in the Metamorphoses, their strategic beginning and ending positions (Strubel 98), their thematic relationships, and the explicit comparison the French ...
