Although the two major sections of Le Roman de la rose were written by different authors about forty years apart, the poem begins and ends with mythological incidents which form a frame for its main narrative. (1) Near the beginning of the poem Guillaume de Lorris recounts Ovid's story of Narcissus; near the end, Jean de Meun tells Ovid's story of Pygmalion (Hult 264 n. 3).
