Rousseau gives republicans a bad name. That, at least, is what Michael Sandel implies when he distances himself from him in a section of Democracy's Discontent entitled "Republican Freedom: Difficulties and Dangers." Sandel puts Rousseau's features on "the coercive face of soulcraft." (1) But licensing the use of force is not Rousseau's fundamental sin.
