Have you ever heard of Louis Pasteur?" asked Mr. Dale, watching his son, Peter, drain the last drop of milk from his glass.
"Didn't he have something to do with milk?" asked Pete.
"Yes, Pasteur was a scientist. He discovered that liquids and foods spoiled because of germ-laden dust from the air. He found the germs could be killed by using heat. A hundred years ago milk was often full of deadly germs. People didn't know this and got typhoid fever, diphtheria, and other dreadful diseases from drinking contaminated milk."
