When some people think of Gypsies, images of fortune-tellers clad in colorful clothes and sparkling jewelry often come to mind. Many Gypsies, or Roma, are trying to end such stereo-typing along with centuries of discrimination.
Originally from northern India, Roma (which means "man" in the Romany language) first appeared in southeastern Europe in the 14th century. Scholars believe famine, drought, or war forced them to leave India. Beginning in the 11th century Europeans mistook them for Egyptians and called them Gypsies.
