CATERING giant Compass shrugged off the economic gloom yesterday as it served up a healthy rise in profits alongside a pounds 193m acquisition in Japan.

The Chertsey-based group said despite uncertain market conditions it remained confident of growing sales by between 6pc to 9pc next year.

And it backed its optimism by snapping up Seiyo Foodservice Systems, the third largest foodservice firm in the consolidating Japanese market.

Compass chief executive Michael Bailey said the deal marked "a step change" in the group's ability to take advantage of growth opportunities ...
