The Third Republic came into existence in 1870 in the midst of the Franco-Prussian War. Many assumed that the new regime was provisional. In the event it survived until 1940. This longevity amazed and appalled many contemporaries. After 1870 France experienced an endless succession of barely distinguishable ministries that achieved very little and were involved in repeated crises.
