AMES SIGNS GO ON 254 EX-ZAYRE UNITS
NEW YORK -- Ames signs are being unveiled on 254 former Zayre stores today, the crowning touch on what is considered the largest retail conversion ever.
Ames Department Stores, Inc., purchased Zayre Corp.'s discount stores in October 1988 for $778 million, making Ames the fourth largest discounter behind Sears, Roebuck & Co., K mart Corp. and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Ames expects to do $5 billion in volume in 1989, compared with $2.1 billion in 1987, prior to the acquisition.
