DNA fingerprinting has demonstrated predominance of the Beijing genotype among Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains isolated in Southeast Asia. We prospectively examined the occurrence of Beijing genotype strains in tuberculosis patients in Indonesia. Early in treatment, patients infected with Beijing genotype strains more often had fever unrelated to disease severity, toxicity, or drug resistance, indicating that Beijing genotype strains may have specific pathogenic properties.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype, the Netherlands.(Dispatches)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; To determine whether the Beijing genotype of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is emerging in the Netherlands, we collected data on 6,829 patients during 1993 to 2000. Six percent had the Beijing genotype. This genotype was associated with diagnosis in recent years, young age, nationality, and multidrug
Beijing/W genotype Mycobacterium tuberculosis and drug resistance: European Concerted Action on New Generation Genetic Markers and Techniques for the Epidemiology and Control of Tuberculosis * (1).
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; Beijing/W genotype Mycobacterium tuberculosis is widespread, may be increasing, and may have a predilection for drug resistance. Individual-level data on >29,000 patients from 49 studies in 35 countries were combined to assess the Beijing genotype's prevalence worldwide, trends over time and
Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing Genotype, Thailand--Reply to Dr. Prodinger.
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; To the Editor: We read with interest the report on the occurrence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains of the Beijing genotype in Thailand (1). In contrast to our findings in Vietnam (2), Prodinger et al. found no significant association between the Beijing genotype and either young age or drug
Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype and risk for treatment failure and relapse, Vietnam.(Dispatches)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; Among 2,901 new smear-positive tuberculosis cases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 40 cases of treatment failure and 39 relapsing cases were diagnosed. All initial and follow-up Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates of these case-patients had (nearly) identical restriction fragment length polymorphism
Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype, northern Malawi.(Dispatches)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; In a 7-year population-based study in Malawi, we showed that Beijing genotype tuberculosis (TB) increased as a proportion of TB cases. All the Beijing genotype strains were fully drug sensitive. Contact histories, TB type, and case-fatality rates were similar for Beijing and non-Beijing genotype
Mycobacterium tuberculosis Isolates of Beijing Genotype in Thailand.(Statistical Data Included)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; To the Editor: Anh and colleagues recently reported that in new tuberculosis (TB) cases from Vietnam, Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates of the Beijing genotype are associated with younger age and, in isolates from Ho Chi Minh City, with resistance against isoniazid and streptomycin (1). However,
Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing Genotype Emerging in Vietnam.(Statistical Data Included)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; To assess whether the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype is emerging in Vietnam, we analyzed 563 isolates from new cases by spoligotyping and examined the association between the genotype and age, resistance, and BCG vaccination status. Three hundred one (54%) patients were infected with
New route of importation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype.(LETTERS)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; To the Editor: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) Beijing genotype is spread throughout the world, and the highest prevalence has been detected in Asia and Eurasia. In western Europe, the prevalence of Beijing strains is relatively low (1-3), and cases in immigrants with Beijing strains are mainly

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing genotype.(Research)
Emerging Infectious Diseases ; Molecular epidemiologic studies of strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are currently conducted worldwide. The genetically distinct Beijing family of strains has been associated with large outbreaks of tuberculosis, increased virulence, and multidrug resistance. However, in this first
