THERE IS ONE possible reason why Adrien Victor Joseph de Gerlache of Belgium and Jean-Baptiste Charcot of France were not the first explorers to set foot on the South Pole. They didn't like the menu.

They encountered no truffles, mushrooms or snails on or around Antarctica. But they stumbled across a whole lot of penguins.
