Four months ago, when Plato and Cicero were joined by Sappho and Emily Dickinson on a banner strung across Columbia University's Butler Library, officers handcuffed and arrested the author of the painted protest. Last week, Columbia graduate Laura Hotchkiss Brown repeated her feminist display, this time with the university's blessing. It was the story of women's studies itself. What started out 20 years ago as an experiment scorned by traditionalists is fast becoming an adopted sister in the higher-education family.
