It was the eminent French neurologist Charcot who first described motor neuron disease (MND) in 1874 (Swash, 2000). Since his thorough and valid description, MND, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as he termed it, remains an enigma (Mitsumoto, 1994). It is a degenerative disorder of the upper and lower motor neurons. Muscular weakness, atrophy, and corticospinal tract signs resulting from degeneration of the motor neurons in the spinal cord, brainstem, and cerebral cortex are the characteristic features of the disease (Rowland, 1982).
