ARISTARCHUS OF SAMOS, THE MATHEMATICIAN WHO PROPOSED THE THEORY THAT THE SUN AND STARS DO NOT MOVE AND THAT THE EARTH moves around the sun, is often credited with the invention of an improved sundial. Called a skaphe, a Greek word meaning "a small boat" or "skiff," the sundial was shaped like a bowl. In the center was a vertical gnomon, a column or pin that casts a shadow indicating the time of day. To make a type of skaphe, gather a few items.
