Bipolar illness, a mood disorder in which both manic and depressive episodes occur more or less cyclically, may be inherited. Usually the disorder is seen before a patient reaches the age of 25, but it can develop anytime from before puberty to old age. Fifteen percent of patients with bipolar disorder commit suicide. They also may be at higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease.
