Salicylic acid functions as an exfoliant, an analgesic, and an anti-inflammatory. It is useful in the treatment of acne, superficial inflammatory disorders, and photoaging, and works well as a superficial, in-office peel.
Many companies, in an effort to capitalize on the popularity of alpha hydroxy acids, have marketed salicylic acid as a "beta hydroxy acid." This occurs even though the term is incorrect--salicylic acid is an aromatic compound.
