V.G. Kiernan is, I gather, an eminent marxisant historian of the modern world. As a boy in the 1920s he conceived an undying love for the ancient Roman poet Horace, and since then has learned nothing more about him or Rome. Kiernan has previously discussed English literary figures like Shakespeare,, which apparently entitles him to write about Horace. While Kiernan's devotion to the Classics is commendable, this book is not.
