TONY Blair yesterday stated publicly for the first time that ground troops would be needed to win the war in Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister made it clear air strikes against the Taliban regime and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda group wouldn't be enough.

He hinted that the air attacks were coming to an end and that frontline Taliban troops, many hiding in trenches north of Kabul, would be targeted in a second, intense phase of the war against international terrorism.
