Montana-based mountaineer Greg Mortenson has devoted eight intensely rewarding years to building schools and public health projects in precipitous, remote reaches of the Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountains of Kashmir and northern Pakistan.

The Central Asia Institute's founder-director hardly expected to find himself on the likely front lines of a 21st century American war.
