How the protein kinesin moves is something of a puzzle. How does it convert the energy carried by the cell's universal energy currency, ATP (adenosine triphosphate), into linear movement along the cell's microtubule tracks? Kinesin's movement along microtubules is somewhat similar to the movement in muscle fibers of myosin along actin. In both cases, the natural tendency has been to say that the energy of ATP is used to create relative motion by a power stroke. That assumption is challenged by the new view of rectified Brownian movement.
